Product Details

The Tekmar Boiler Control 256
is a microprocessor-based outdoor reset boiler control designed to regulate the supply water temperature from a single boiler based on the outdoor temperature. To avoid boiler short cycling and large temperature swings, the Tekmar 256 is able to continuously adjust the boiler differential. It also includes control functions such as Warm Weather Shut Down (WWSD) and Minimum Boiler setting. The control has a liquid crystal display (LCD) that normally displays the Boiler Supply temperature, but can display other temperatures and settings. Tekmar 070 outdoor sensor and 071 universal sensor included.

Energy Saving Features

Outdoor Reset: A building's heat loss or gain depends considerably on two things:

1. Outdoor air temperature

(as temperature difference between the exterior and interior increases, so does the rate of heat transfer)

2. The building envelope's resistance to heat transfer

(a higher R value in building materials will impede the transfer of heat).

How an Average Heating System Works... When the interior air temperature drops below the thermostat setting, a signal is sent to the boiler to turn on. Unfortunately, the thermostat only tells the boiler to turn on when the house is too cold or turn off when the house is too warm. There is no in-between..

How Your Heating System Should Work... How many miles per gallon would your car get if the only method of controlling your speed was to accelerate until you're going too fast, and then apply the brakes? You adjust your car's gas pedal to maintain a comfortable driving speed and good fuel economy. Why not the same with your heating system? By adding a tekmar Outdoor Reset Control, heating system water temperatures are adjusted to maintain comfort and improve system efficiency.

It's Not Your Heating System's Fault! If a heating system does not know if it is a cool autumn night or the coldest winter day, it works as if it's always the coldest day of the year and heats the water to a maximum temperature. Having this hot water in the distribution piping when it's not needed results in stand-by heat loss. By adding a tekmar Outdoor Reset Control that works alongside of your boiler and thermostat, you may see energy savings of up to 30%

Scheduling & Setback: Many tekmar thermostats include easy to use scheduling features. Scheduling allows for a reduction in temperature (setback) for rooms that are not expected to be in use.

IPurging This feature allows for continued circulation of any heat left in the high temperature areas of the system. Residual heat is used by the living space instead of being lost to the mechanical room. Some controls will also supply heat using circulating water prior to operating the boiler if it appears that there is enough heat left in the system to satisfy current requirements. This means that the boiler is turning on and off less frequently, saving fuel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I find tekmar products in the store? Answer: Because many tekmar products require specialized installer training, they are only available through heating supply companies.

I have a tekmar control in the mechanical room. Can I still use the same control if I replace the boiler or change the fuel source in the future? Answer: In many instances, yes. An exception would be if the replacement boiler was a modulating type and the original control operated a non-modulating boiler

Will I need to call the installer every time I want to change the settings on my control or thermostat?. Answer: For thermostats and setpoint controls you can change many settings yourself. If you are unsure of the reason for a setting or don't know how to adjust it, the User Brochures in the literature section of this web site can help you. For mechanical room controls, it is important that you do not change settings unless you are sure of their purpose.

Will I notice any changes in comfort after having a control system installed? Answer: You may notice that temperature swings are eliminated.

Will I notice any changes in energy consumption after having a control system installed? Answer: You should notice reduced fuel consumption primarily during the fall and spring seasons. A study done by the Center for Energy and Environment in St.Paul, MN found savings that ranged from 10 to 25% in systems retrofitted with boiler reset controls.

I think there may be something wrong with a control in my building. What can I do? Answer: The best option is to contact the contractor that originally installed the control system. If that is not possible, the next step would be to contact your local tekmar representative for assistance and / or a recommendation to a contractor in your area that has had training for tekmar products.

I have a tekmar control in my house and would like to find out what it is for. Where should I look? Answer: First, check the control for the three-digit product number. They are printed on the front of mechanical control labels. Digital display thermostats and tN4 controls have a setting in their Miscellaneous Menu that will tell you their product type number. You may also find product numbers for thermostats on the back or inside a flip-open compartment. Once you determine the control number, refer to the products section of this web site.
